Multi-storey car park Allianz Arena

Multi-storey car park Allianz Arena

Project Description

With approx. 10,000 parking spaces, the parking garage of the Munich Allianz Arena is the largest parking garage in Europe. After three years of construction it was opened in 2005. The design consists basically of in-situ concrete floor slabs with partial prestressing, point based in a grid of about L = W = 10 m.

Task

We were comissioned in 2002 by the responsible firm and instruceted to create a durability concept for the floors of the parking garage which would be driven on.

Procedure

A two step approach was developed to ensure the durability toward chloid induced reinforcement corrosion. A prerequisite for this was a mounting of the floor slabs without any force (to avoid cracking caused by force):

  • In the areas where there were no cracks on the top side of the floors, the selection of a suitable concrete recipe in connection with an adequate concrete cover ensured that chloride diffused into the airtight and thick concrete covering so slowly that the durability of the floors could be assured over a stipulated time period. The calculated chloride permeation would constantly be checked with help from incorporated corrosion sensors and was integrated into the concept of the securing adequate durability through additional maintenance and action plans .
  • In ceiling areas where load conditions lead to cracking (directly encompassing the supports) a covering was arranged to bypass cracking.
