Project DescriptionThe tracery and crabbing of the spire of Regensburg Cathedral, which were reconstructed out of concrete between the years 1954 and 1957 to replace the destroyed original sandstone masonry, had some major damage as a result of continuous weathering. TaskWe were contracted from the Regensburg State Building Department to determine the condition of the spire, to deliver an assessment of the stability and to develope a repair concept. ProcedureTo minimize the extent of the repair, the tracery surfaces of the southern spire were examined for cracking and softening and, based on the degree of damage, were organized into classes of damage. For different classes of damage, different repair concepts were developed. In cooperation with the TU Munich, the Department of Building Materials of MPA BAU developed a repair mortar, which was adapted to the material properties of the existing concrete and featured a sufficient durability in regard to exposure to frost as well as a very good workability. The repair work was carried out by the staff of the Regensburg Cathedral Building Lodge. Publications
